Greetings from 2nd grade!! This is my last official newsletter. We had a crazy week, but we are wrapping some things up. Take note of the following:
Thank you to all of you that showed up for the spring musical. The kids sounded great. Mrs. Bell did a fantastic job preparing them. It is wonderful to hear the kids sing praises to God!!
Field day is tomorrow Friday, May 14th. Remember you do not have to report to school. You can go straight to field day. As soon as your child’s events are completed you are free to go if you would like. Remember this does count as a school day. I will be working the ball throw so please try to stop in so I can mark attendance. Have a great day!!
On Saturday, May 15th we are celebrating Mr. Mumby’s retirement. The dinner is being catered, but we are asking that you bring a dessert to share. It starts at 6:30 PM. We would love to see you there!!
Don’t forget to work on the reading project. It is your last weekend!! Please follow the directions very carefully. Remember it is due on Monday, May 17th. Points will be deducted if the project is turned in late. I can’t wait to see what the kids are reading!!!
Our field trip is Monday, May 17th. I sent a note home on Monday explaining everything. We will leave at 8:45 AM. If you are driving/chaperoning please meet in the library at 8:30 AM. We will be eating our snack right away in the morning. Please send something that will substantial as we will be eating a late lunch. Your child will bring a sack lunch, but we will not eat it until we get back to school around 12:30. We will continue with the school day after that. If you wish to take your child home with you immediately following the trip Mrs. Lillard will mark a ½ or ¼ day absence for your child.
This coming week is the last week of school!! There is no memory or spelling unit!
We earned another marble party just in time. We will be having our last marble party next Wednesday, May 19th.
Eighth grade graduation is Thursday, May 20th at 7:00 PM.
Most of your child’s things will be sent home next Thursday. Take a look through some of the workbooks. There are some review units in spelling and some review pages in reading that could be done over the summer for extra practice. It’s good to keep things fresh in your child’s mind! I will also be sending a packet of things home for over the summer. It is not mandatory for them to be done, but just some ideas for things to do over the summer!
Friday, May 21st is the last day of school and we will be getting out at 11:30 AM. We will not be having the school wide pizza party this year. Enjoy the summer!!
Here’s what we have been up to this week.
Religion: This week we continued to talk about Paul. I introduced the words conspiracy and ambush. Sounds like Paul was in some trouble again!! In our Bible story we learned how God blessed Paul when he was in jail. God used Paul’s nephew, a Roman Centurion, and a Commanding Officer to keep Paul safe. Even after all this, Paul was still in jail, but in another city. Actually, Paul spent practically the rest of his life in jail. But Paul trusted in the Lord and God blessed Paul and his work. Visitors were allowed to visit Paul and he used that time to share the love of Christ. In addition, during those times in jail, Paul wrote many letters to his Christian friends. Many of those letters we still read today.
Math: In math this week, we practiced dividing a set of objects into equal groups. I used this time to show the kids that division is simply the opposite of multiplication. Many of them caught on, but keep practicing at home. We practiced recording information on a graph and we took our final fact test and written assessment. We are finished with the math curriculum so next week we will review with some games.
Reading: In reading this week we went over the following high frequency words: ago, earth, slowly, those, shall, and different. We identified adjectives and adverbs in the story. Finally, we reviewed those –ed and –ing endings.
Science/SS: In science this week we took our quiz over the food guide pyramid. Because of musical practice, we did not get to social studies. We have been talking about the marketplace and hope to finish up next week.
Language Arts: This week we worked really hard on our fictional stories. I asked the kids to focus on making sure they had a beginning, middle, and end. In addition, we worked on using adjectives. They will be sent home next week!
Spelling/Phonics: We have finished our spelling book. This summer please have your children review the words by doing the review units. In phonics, we continued to work on prefixes. In addition, we have been reviewing synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms.
Remember to find the joys in each day!! First Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances.” God’s blessings on your upcoming week!
In Christ,
Miss Rempfer
